James 4:6-10

“But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.”

  • One of our biggest shortcomings is that we often evaluate our walk with God without doing much to improve it! We know that we should spend more time in God’s word and communicating with Him in prayer, but we just cannot seem to find the time. Church, small groups, and accountability partners are important but something else always pops up! If changes do not occur, results will not occur! Submit. Resist. Come near. Wash. Purify. Humble. None of these are easy but they are all necessary! The results of obedience to these instructions are the devil will flee; God will come near to you; and you will be lifted up! Everything good comes from God! Desire God in your heart; Desire to get rid of the junk in your life; Seek God in His word and through prayer; and realize that you are nothing without God! He will transform your life to a life of peace and joy that is not dependent on your circumstances! He loves and desires us, but he will not force us into a relationship! He provided a Way through His Son, but He gives us the option of choosing! We are loved, but a relationship comes when we accept that love, are transformed by that love, and are committed to the one who loves us! Without Him we are nothing! Get off the throne of your life and let Jesus take control! Draw near to God and He will draw near to you!
  • What does the bible tell you to do that you never seem to be able to accomplish?
  • What sins are you holding onto?
  • How often do you draw near to God?
  • How often do you resist the devil?
  • Is your desire to walk with God strong enough that you are willing to make some changes?
  • What would your life look like if you would just humble yourself before God?

Submit – Give God total control.

Resist – Do not keep doing the same thing and expecting different results.

Wash and Purify – Repent and ask forgiveness for your sins.

Grieve, Mourn, & Wail – Understand that Christ died for your sins.

Humble Yourself – Realize and acknowledge who you are and who God is.

Matthew 4:7

“Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”” We have no right to put God to a test. When we understand who God is, and who we are, the only correct response is humility.

Matthew 4:3-4

“And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”” If you say you are seeking God daily, but you are not consistently in His Word, then I challenge that God is not your priority. God’s Word will change your life by guiding every step you take. Get to know His Word and let it guide your every step. The application of His Word to your life will bring peace and joy that you cannot find anywhere else. If you are just feeding your body with food, you are just existing, but if you are feeding your soul with God’s Word, you are living. Make a vow today to truly “live” the rest of your life. We try not to miss many meals, but how often do we skip getting into the Word? Maybe that is why we often feel spiritually malnourished. How much time do you spend meditating on God’s Word, versus thinking about your next meal? Do you need to adjust

Matthew 4:1

“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.” The Holy Spirit may lead us to a place where we will be tempted, but He will not leave us there alone. Overcoming temptation strengthens us. Romans 8:28 “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

Matthew 3:10

“The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.” A Christian, by claim only, is not a Christian. We must live a Jesus proclaiming life. What fruit are you producing in your Christian walk? What in your daily walk sets you apart from those who do not know Christ as their Savior? Do others want what you have because of the joy they see in your life?

Matthew 1:23

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us) All other gifts are not relevant compared to the true Gift of Christmas. Jesus is the only gift we need, and the only essential gift. He is available to all who will receive Him, but no one will benefit from a gift they refuse.

Proverbs 31:30

“Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” There is nothing more beautiful than a Christlike woman. As a matter of fact, the beauty of everyone is directly proportional to their walk with Christ.
